Using Window Insulation to Reduce Drafts

Most of the insulation material that the average person is aware of is the stuff you put in your attic or in your walls. These insulation materials block the movement of heat. So when heat is on the outside of your house it doesn't come inside the house. And, when heat is inside your house, it doesn't go outside your house. However, no matter how well insulated your walls may be, if there are gaps around your windows, you may get cold drafts through your home.

Finding Window Drafts

In order to remove window drafts, you must first determine from where the drafts are coming. You can determine this by using the following procedure:

1. Carry a lit candle.
2. Move the candle very slowly all along the window edges.
3. Pay special attention for sudden movements in the flame.

Applying Window Insulation

When you apply window insulation, you will help reduce more than just drafts. You will find that you make a considerable dent in your energy bills and the amount of noise making its way into your house.

There are many different methods of getting rid of window drafts. In some cases you may wish to use an aluminum frame. In other cases you might want a frame made with PVC. Both choices provide good weather resistance. You can purchase these in a kit that will allow you to fit them onto the current frames.

A primary goal of window frames is after all to improve the energy efficiency of the home. It should also provide a measure of household security and look nice. However, meeting all of these goals can be very expensive.

If cost is a concern for you, the PVC frame kit is a very affordable option, which still provides for your security, energy efficiency, and aesthetic needs. Similarly there are PVCU kits, which are very affordable, but may not last as long or be as secure.
